The Diverse Culture of Japan

Japan has enjoyed a great evolution in terms of its culture over the years. From the country’s original Jomon customs until the present period, time has eased the intolerant and prejudiced Japanese mindset, resulting to a more contemporary yet unique way of life.

Traditional Japanese arts and crafts continue to retain their popularity among the locals. These include crafts like ikebana, a special type of flower arrangement, and origami, the art of paper folding. Cultural performances also abound in the country, such as the bunraku, a puppet theatre, and kabuki, a drama often centred on dance performances. The fusion of traditional woodblock printing and Western art led to the creation of manga, which is a popular comic book format within the country, and which has in turn led to the creation of television’s anime.

With major leaps and bounds introduced in Japanese technology, video game consoles have also become popular and prospered since the 1980s. Furthermore, Japanese music is deemed eclectic, with many borrowed instruments and styles from neighbouring cultures.
